David Popovici achieves historic double gold at European Championships
David Popovici has made history by becoming the first swimmer to win gold in both the 100m and 200m freestyle events at three consecutive European Championships. His remarkable victories took place in Rome 2022, Belgrade 2024, and Paris 2026, solidifying his status as one of the sport's greats.
At the recent Championships in Paris, Popovici secured not one, but two gold medals, showcasing his exceptional talent and dedication. He expressed excitement about the future of swimming, particularly regarding the rivalry with fellow swimmer Leon Marchand, stating that it could be truly extraordinary.
Popovici also highlighted the significance of his training this summer with Pan Zhanle, noting that it has provided him with valuable insights and a wealth of knowledge. He described the experience as extremely useful and full of lessons, adding that breaking the world record is one of his main objectives.
In a show of sportsmanship, Popovici congratulated his fellow competitors by saying, 'jos pălăria,' and praised their excellent times. Meanwhile, the overall medal standings revealed that Great Britain led the chart with 8 golds, followed by Italy and Russia. Romania claimed the 9th spot with two gold medals, contributing to the nation's pride in the swimming arena.
