Craiova set to welcome a new multifunctional sports complex
Craiova is on the verge of a significant transformation with the upcoming ‘Complexul Multifuncțional Stadionul Tineretului,’ a state-of-the-art arena that will enhance the city’s sports offerings. This ambitious project, approved by the Dolj County Council on October 7, 2026, comes with an impressive funding of over 40 million euros, supported by the European Union.
The new complex will feature a capacity of over 8,000 seats and include a unique indoor velodrome, the only one of its kind in this part of Europe. Additionally, it will house an indoor athletics track rated for international competitions, alongside modular playing surfaces for various indoor sports.
Construction of the arena is already underway, with the grandstands nearing completion. Following this, work on the innovative roof structure will commence, promising to be a standout feature among Romanian constructions. The project has been initially funded through the Dolj County Council’s own budget, showcasing local commitment to this vision.
Beyond sports, the arena is designed to be a versatile venue, capable of hosting concerts and other artistic events, thus enriching the cultural landscape of Craiova. The complex will also provide training rooms, medical offices, changing facilities, and shops, making it a comprehensive sports and community hub.
This project is part of the Sustainable Development and Just Transition Program for 2021-2027, aiming to revitalize an unused urban area into a modern space dedicated to sports and community engagement. Cosmin Vasile, the president of the Dolj County Council, has been a key advocate for this initiative, which promises to elevate Craiova's status as a vibrant sports city alongside its existing facilities, such as the Ion Oblemenco Stadium and the recently opened athletics stadium.
