Craiova crowned best Christmas market in Europe for 2026

Craiova has achieved a remarkable feat by securing the top spot in the ranking of the best Christmas markets in Europe for 2026. The city received over 142,000 votes, propelling it from second place in the previous ranking to this prestigious position.

Each year, Europe hosts more than 1,500 Christmas markets, and Craiova's offering is set to shine brightly with its expansive layout of over 280,000 square meters. The theme for the 2026 edition is 'The Nutcracker,' promising a magical experience for all visitors.

Attendees can expect to be enchanted by giant ornaments, toy-shaped sculptures, and countless light installations throughout the market. One of the standout attractions will be Santa's flying sleigh, which will soar to the highest height in Eastern Europe, adding to the festive atmosphere.

The Craiova Christmas market will be open from mid-November until early January, inviting visitors to enjoy not only the sights but also a taste of specialties from Armenia, Georgia, Greece, Bulgaria, and Serbia.

Following Craiova, Zurich holds the second position in the ranking, with its Wienachtsdorf market set up between the Opera House and Lake Zurich. Riga, the capital of Latvia, takes third place with its main market located in the UNESCO-listed Dome Square. Lisbon and Debrecen round out the top five, showcasing the diverse and vibrant Christmas celebrations across Europe.

This recognition of Craiova is a testament to the city's commitment to creating a festive and welcoming environment, ensuring that it will be a must-visit destination for holiday revelers in 2026.
