Cluj-Napoca opens Romania's first large-scale voluntary waste collection center

Cluj-Napoca has taken a significant step toward sustainable waste management by inaugurating Romania's first large-scale voluntary waste collection center. This facility, part of a nationwide initiative, represents an investment of over 30 million lei, primarily funded by non-repayable European funds through the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR).

This center addresses the pressing issue of bulky waste, construction debris, electronic waste, and organic materials. Residents can bring items such as old mattresses, tires, renovation rubble, dead animals, broken furniture, or refrigerators free of charge, greatly enhancing local waste disposal options.

Notably, the center also facilitates the separate collection of household waste, promoting responsible disposal practices. Materials such as wood, metal, plastic, and paper collected here will re-enter the local economic circuit as secondary raw materials, aligning with the principles of the circular economy, where waste is transformed into a resource.

In the coming months, hundreds of smaller collection centers will be completed across the country, complementing the establishment of 13 large collection centers in cities like Craiova, Buzău, Brașov, Constanța, Iași, București, and Sibiu. This initiative marks a pivotal moment in Romania's commitment to improving waste management and fostering environmental sustainability.
