Romania and Serbia unite for strategic Djerdap 3 hydropower project
Romania and Serbia have signed a memorandum for the Djerdap 3 hydropower project, marking a significant step in energy cooperation between the two countries. This project, known as Porțile de Fier 3, is a pumped-storage hydroelectric power plant that is expected to enhance energy security in the region.
The memorandum was signed on Thursday, July 16, and establishes a framework for the exchange of information and expertise between Romania and Serbia. Interim Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan emphasized the long history of energy collaboration between the two nations, noting the importance of such projects in today's context of energy security, economic competitiveness, and quality of life.
Djerdap 3 aims to increase energy storage capacity and facilitate the integration of renewable energy sources. It is considered a strategic asset for the region, particularly in light of rising energy prices that impact both businesses and citizens. Bolojan highlighted that pumped-storage plants can store surplus energy and deliver it to the grid when needed, further strengthening energy resilience.
In June 2026, the Romanian government approved the negotiation and signing of the Memorandum of Understanding for Djerdap 3, with Ilie Gavril Bolojan designated to oversee the discussions. The Romanian side aims to develop the project under reasonable conditions, ensuring that it does not adversely affect the operation of the existing Porțile de Fier I and II hydropower plants.
The implementation of the Djerdap 3 project will involve coordination with the FAST DANUBE II project, led by the transport ministries of Romania and Bulgaria, with AFDJ RA Galați and IAPPD Ruse as the involved waterway administrations. Designated focal points from both countries' relevant ministries will facilitate ongoing collaboration as this vital project moves forward.
