The Universal Day of the Romanian Blouse was celebrated in Nicosia, marking a heartfelt connection between Romania and Cyprus. This vibrant event, held on Friday evening, showcased the beauty and significance of the Romanian blouse, recognized as a part of UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Organized by the Romanian Embassy in Cyprus, the celebration brought together government representatives, diplomats, and members of the business and academic communities from both nations. Among the highlights was the launch of the Romanian-Cypriot scarf 'Dialoguri Brodate', crafted by Flori de Ie and designer Michalis Pantelidis, blending traditional motifs from both cultures.
Flori de Ie, founded by Cristina Chiriac, features traditional Romanian costumes, some over 150 years old. This collection was presented as a form of 'cultural diplomacy' through fashion and textile heritage, emphasizing the importance of cultural exchange. Cristina Chiriac, also the president of CONAF, expressed, 'Peace is built through culture,' underscoring the role of shared values in fostering trust.
Lavinia Ochea, chargé d'affaires of Romania in Cyprus, dedicated the event to the identity and friendship between the two states. She affirmed, 'Through the presentation of the Flori de Ie collection and the launch of the Romanian-Cypriot Scarf of Friendship, we reaffirm our belief that cultural heritage and art can create lasting bridges between peoples.'
Ana Maria Geană, the state advisor for the Romanian diaspora, highlighted the Romanian blouse as a symbol of cultural identity and resilience. She noted the critical role of women entrepreneurs in the economy and in strengthening diaspora communities.
Marina Hadjimanolis, Minister of Maritime Transport of Cyprus, emphasized that the ties between the two countries are built 'through friendship, mutual respect, and common European values.' Philokypros Roussounides, Secretary-General of the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry, echoed the importance of cooperation between business communities in both nations, particularly spotlighting the significant role of women in the economy.
This event not only celebrated a beautiful garment but also deepened the cultural connections and friendships that bind Romania and Cyprus, paving the way for future collaborations and shared understanding.
