Apahida welcomes Ukraine's first honorary consulate in Romania
The recent opening of Ukraine's first honorary consulate in Romania marks a significant milestone for the Ukrainian community in the country. Located in Apahida, this consulate aims to strengthen ties and support for the approximately 50,000 Ukrainians living in the northwest region of Romania.
The consulate officially opened on Saturday, with Vasile Serioja Ruscovan appointed as the honorary consul. His role will be vital in addressing the needs of Ukrainians, especially in areas like Cluj, where around 3,200 individuals reside, and Maramureș, home to 24,000 Ukrainians.
During the opening ceremony, Oleksandr Mischenko, the deputy foreign minister of Ukraine, expressed his happiness about the event and extended gratitude to Romanian authorities for providing refuge to Ukrainians during these challenging times. The presence of local and diplomatic representatives, including Maria Forna, the prefect of Cluj, and vice-presidents of the Cluj County Council, Vakar Istvan and Radu Rațiu, underscored the importance of this development.
The event featured the national anthems of both Ukraine and Romania, fostering a spirit of unity. A moment of silence was also observed to honor those who have lost their lives in the war in Ukraine, reminding attendees of the ongoing challenges faced by the Ukrainian people.
While Vasile Ruscovan pointed out that the numbers regarding the Ukrainian community may not be entirely accurate, the establishment of the consulate signifies a commitment to enhance communication and support for this vibrant community.
