AgriConnect aims to transform Romania into a strategic agro-food supplier for Europe

Romania has the potential to become a strategic supplier of agro-food products for both the region and Europe. The implementation of the AgriConnect program, which began in 2023, is a significant step towards realizing this goal.

Launched by the World Bank and announced in October 2022, AgriConnect is one of the key programs aimed at transforming agriculture globally. It focuses on helping small farmers transition from subsistence farming to viable and profitable enterprises, addressing the critical need for a stronger agro-food processing industry.

To fully exploit Romania's agro-food potential, competitive farms, investment, technology, and better cooperation are essential. AgriConnect aims to support the entire agro-food chain—from farm and processing to storage, packaging, distribution, and export. This approach will not only enhance the value-added processes but also ensure that less is lost before products reach consumers.

Alexandru Nazare, the interim Minister of Finance, emphasizes that public resources must create a multiplying effect in the economy. He also stressed that international financial facilities need to effectively reach the real economy. Meanwhile, Tanczos Barna, the interim Minister of Agriculture, underscores the importance of tailoring AgriConnect to meet the actual needs of the local sector.

As part of a broader strategy, the World Bank has announced plans to double its annual funding for agribusiness to approximately $9 billion by 2030. This funding will complement European funds rather than duplicate them, ensuring a more robust infrastructure for Romania's agricultural landscape.

The vision for AgriConnect is to shift Romanian agriculture from primarily exporting raw materials to producing, processing, and exporting value-added products. This transformation could significantly enhance Romania's role in the European agro-food market, positioning it as a key player in the region.
