Wizz Air marks 20 years of connecting Romania to the world
Wizz Air proudly celebrates two decades of operations in Romania, a milestone that highlights its role as the country's largest airline. Since its inaugural flight from Bucharest Băneasa to London Luton in January 2007, Wizz Air has expanded significantly, creating nine bases across the nation and offering over 235 routes from 14 Romanian airports.
The anniversary event took place in Târgu Mureș, the site of Wizz Air's first flight in Romania. This gathering brought together local authorities, passengers, and cabin crew members to commemorate the airline's journey. Among the notable attendees was Ian Malin, Chief Commercial Officer of Wizz Air, who reflected on the millions of passengers who have chosen Wizz Air since its first takeoff in July 2006.
As part of the celebrations, lucky passengers received vouchers for future travel and a special discount of up to 20% on selected flights booked today, valid for travel from July 20 to December 10, 2026. Tickets can be easily reserved online or through the WIZZ mobile app.
Wizz Air has transported over 120 million passengers to and from Romania over the past 20 years, including nearly 15 million in the last calendar year alone. With a flight completion rate of 99.7% and a punctuality rate of 78.4%, the airline ensures a reliable travel experience.
In 2026, Wizz Air has expanded its operations further, launching new flights to Oradea and reopening bases in Târgu Mureș, Suceava, and Bucharest Băneasa. The airline has also significantly increased its leisure destination portfolio by 45% compared to the previous summer season.
Wizz Air employs over 1,900 people in Romania and has recruited 50 new colleagues this year. The importance of Târgu Mureș Airport in regional development was highlighted by Peti Andras, the airport's director, while Csibi Attila, Vice President of the Mureș County Council, emphasized the need for the region to remain open and continuously developing.
Wizz Air's commitment to the community is also evident in its various initiatives, including sponsoring the Wizz Air Cluj-Napoca Marathon and participating in the Bucharest International Air Show. Moreover, the WIZZ Foundation has partnered with the Aripi pe Pământ Association to support the unique Flight Camp for children, founded by Wizz Air Captain Mihai Sturzu.
