Tourism in Romania sees significant growth in early 2026
In the first five months of 2026, Romania recorded 4.51 million arrivals at accommodation facilities, marking a 0.8% increase compared to the same period in 2025. This growth is complemented by a notable rise in foreign visitors, with over 950,600 tourists arriving from abroad—an impressive 8.4% increase from last year.
The total number of overnight stays also climbed to 8.68 million, reflecting a 2.2% rise compared to the first five months of 2025. Among these, 83.2% of arrivals were Romanian tourists, who accounted for 78.8% of total overnight stays, demonstrating their pivotal role in sustaining the local tourism market.
Foreign tourists, making up 16.8% of the arrivals, enjoyed longer stays, averaging 2.4 days compared to 1.9 days for Romanian visitors. The net occupancy rate of accommodation facilities has also seen improvement, rising by 0.6 percentage points to 26.9%, indicating enhanced utilization of available lodging.
The majority of foreign visitors came from Europe, contributing to 84.6% of the total. Notable countries sending tourists included Italy, Germany, and Israel, with 107,400, 98,300, and 77,500 visitors, respectively. This influx highlights Romania's growing appeal as a travel destination.
In total, 4.95 million arrivals of foreign visitors were recorded at border points during this period, a 4.7% increase compared to the previous year. Meanwhile, Romanian travelers undertook 9.16 million trips abroad, indicating a healthy appetite for exploration beyond the nation's borders, with 92.4% of these journeys directed towards European destinations.
Mădălin Măncilă emphasizes the necessity for Romania to adopt a long-term strategic approach to tourism. He believes that treating tourism solely as a self-sustaining sector is insufficient, and calls for policies that position tourism as a key strategic industry. With the right focus and development, Romania has the potential to emerge as a prominent destination on the global tourism map.
