Strada Sforii to undergo restoration, promising a brighter future for Romania's narrowest street

30 Jun 2026, 08:00

Strada Sforii, the narrowest street in Romania and the third narrowest in Europe, is set to receive a much-needed facelift. The street has been closed since last year, leaving both locals and tourists disappointed. A foreign tourist recently expressed their frustration, saying they had just seen it in a travel guide and were eager to visit, while another traveler from the Netherlands lamented missing the chance to see this unique landmark.

In a positive step forward, the Brașov City Hall has secured the agreement of property owners to restore the façades of the buildings lining Strada Sforii. The estimated value of the rehabilitation project exceeds two million lei, with the owners of the four buildings contributing 20% of the total cost. This collaboration emphasizes the community's commitment to preserving their local heritage.

The façades of the buildings on Strada Sforii are currently in a state of advanced degradation, highlighting the urgency of the restoration. Mayor George Scripcaru has been proactive, discussing with the Ministry of Culture the possibility of designating the Strada Sforii ensemble as a national historical monument. This classification would not only honor the street's historical significance but could also attract more visitors once the renovations are complete.

Access to Strada Sforii will remain restricted until the project is finished, with hopes of reopening by the end of the year. Additional safety measures will be implemented, including the installation of surveillance cameras and a fixed point for the local police, ensuring a secure environment for both residents and tourists. While the temporary closure has caused some frustration, the promise of a revitalized Strada Sforii offers a hopeful glimpse into the future.
