Seniors empower youth through free educational support in Romania
For nearly 20 years, a remarkable initiative by the Royal Foundation has brought together seniors and children in a vibrant after-school program. This project, inspired by a similar model seen by Majestatea Sa in Switzerland or Belgium, aims to create meaningful connections between generations, fostering an environment where both can thrive.
Seniors, affectionately referred to as 'seniori', serve as educators, sharing their wisdom and life experiences with children. Among them is Gabriela Pârvu, who at nearly 70, has transitioned from a career as a translator to becoming a tutor in Romanian and foreign languages. Her first day at the center was just last year, but she has already made a significant impact on the lives of her students.
One of her students, 15-year-old Teodora, attends the after-school program with her younger siblings. With the support of Gabriela and other tutors, Teodora finds not only academic guidance but also emotional support as she prepares for her national evaluations. Her parents could not afford private tutoring, making this free opportunity invaluable for her family.
The program serves over 600 children daily across 42 centers in Romania, thanks to the dedication of more than 200 senior volunteers. The eldest among them is an impressive 88 years old, demonstrating that age is no barrier to making a difference. The kids enjoy a warm meal and receive help with their school supplies, ensuring they are well-prepared for their studies.
Research shows that these intergenerational centers offer immense benefits for both seniors and children, countering feelings of abandonment that many older adults have faced. Volunteers like Aurel Popescu and Niculina Frătea contribute their time and skills, creating a nurturing environment where children can find role models and borrowed grandparents.
As the program continues to evolve, it addresses the needs of two generations often overlooked by society. This heartwarming initiative not only enriches the lives of its participants but also fosters a sense of community and care in Romania.
