Romanian researchers explore sustainable eel farming solutions

13 Jun 2026, 13:27

Romanian researchers are on a mission to find solutions for farming eels in the country, aiming to ensure a steady supply of this highly valued fish. Eel is not only a delicacy in Romanian restaurants but is also celebrated internationally for its unique taste, often featured in Japanese cuisine.

To achieve their goal, researchers in Constanța will test and monitor two batches of European eel over the course of a year. The team is focused on creating a controlled environment that optimizes growth conditions and monitors the behavior and development of the eels.

With the number of eels in Europe decreasing over the past decades, the need for sustainable farming has never been more pressing. The insights gained from this research could pave the way for a new type of aquaculture business, ensuring premium quality eel meat for consumers.

If successful, this initiative could lead to the establishment of specialized eel farms along the Romanian coastline. This would not only help maintain the eel's presence in the market but also enhance Romania's reputation in the international culinary scene, where eel is regarded as one of the most sought-after seafood options.
