Romanian Producers Join METRO's Supply Chain, Unlocking Growth Potential

15 Jun 2026, 00:10

Karan Khurana, CEO of METRO România, has announced that local poultry and red meat producers have become suppliers for the METRO group, marking a significant step toward enhancing Romania's presence in the food industry.

The company's commitment to sourcing poultry entirely from Romania demonstrates a strong belief in local production capabilities. However, currently only 15% of their red meat supply comes from local producers, while fish contributes to just 10% of the supply. Khurana sees a tremendous opportunity for growth in meeting local consumption needs, suggesting that with the right policies and investments in infrastructure, Romania could become a key player in the regional and even European food market.

To supply METRO, companies must adhere to rigorous standards concerning packaging, calibration, standardization, quality control, and hygiene. Khurana acknowledges that while some producers successfully meet these requirements, many others struggle. This presents both a challenge and an opportunity for local businesses to elevate their practices and expand their market reach.

With METRO operating in approximately 25 countries, Khurana's vision for Romania involves fostering a stronger local supply chain. He recently shared these insights at the 2026 edition of the ZF Retail Summit, emphasizing the potential for Romanian producers to thrive in this competitive landscape.
