Romania Launches Ambitious Black Sea AI Gigafactory Project

The Black Sea AI Gigafactory (AIGF) is set to make a significant impact as a Romanian-led initiative that aims to install over 100,000 artificial intelligence accelerators. This ambitious project is designed to enhance technological sovereignty within the European Union.

Located in Cernavodă and Doicești, the gigafactory is part of a broader European strategy that seeks to bolster the region's capabilities in cutting-edge technology. The total projected cost of this venture is estimated to be between 4 and 5 billion euros.

In April, Romania officially launched a request for initial expressions of interest (EoI) to gauge potential investor interest. The Ministry of Energy is coordinating the project and has received inquiries from investors regarding the support measures that the Romanian government plans to implement.

These inquiries included questions about potential funding sources for the project, with a focus on European-level instruments, national public financing mechanisms, grants, or loans. The interest from investors reflects a growing confidence in Romania's commitment to fostering private investment in this transformative initiative.
