Romania builds a national hub for artificial intelligence

17 Jun 2026, 15:20

Romania is taking a significant step towards technological independence by establishing a national hub for artificial intelligence (HRIA). This ambitious project aims to transform advanced research into commercial solutions, addressing the gap between local IT talent and the country's ability to develop its own technology.

Coordinated by the National University of Science and Technology POLITEHNICA Bucharest, HRIA brings together a consortium of prominent universities, including the University of Timișoara, the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca, Gheorghe Asachi Technical University of Iași, the Politehnica University of Timișoara, the University of Bucharest, and Babeș-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca. This collaborative effort is funded through European strategic priorities under the STEP initiative.

The hub will also include eight innovative SMEs selected through a competitive process, providing them with the opportunity to test ideas and validate prototypes using public high-performance computing infrastructure. This resource will eliminate the current reliance on external infrastructures for research, empowering local researchers.

In Timișoara, researchers are already making strides by developing advanced deep learning solutions and analyzing satellite images to assess climate change. Their algorithms are also aiding in the rapid processing of CT scans and MRIs, demonstrating the practical applications of the project.

Moreover, HRIA is designed to combat the brain drain in the IT and biomedical research sectors, ensuring that Romania retains its intellectual capital. The long-term goal is to position the hub as a viable partner within the European Union's networks of excellence, thus securing Romania's capacity to develop transparent and secure AI systems.

In addition to the HRIA initiative, local projects like 'Sprijin Pentru Seniorii Din Videle' are enhancing social services for the elderly in Teleorman, showcasing Romania's commitment to improving quality of life across different demographics. As the country continues to make strides in both technology and social welfare, the future looks promising.
