Pro TV leads in media trust among Romanians, with 61% confidence
In a world where trust in news is at its lowest in decades, Pro TV shines as a beacon of reliability for Romanians, earning the confidence of 61% of the population. This places it as the most trusted media brand in the country, followed closely by Radio România and Digi 24, both garnering a trust level of 55%.
Despite the challenging landscape, where only 37% of Romanians trust news produced by media institutions, public broadcasting services remain among the top five most trusted media brands. This trust is crucial as these services rely heavily on state funding, with over 90% of their financing coming from the government, amounting to approximately 84 million euros annually.
The recent report from the Reuters Institute highlights a global shift in news consumption, with platforms like TikTok, Facebook, and YouTube becoming increasingly popular sources of information. In the UK, traditional news formats still surpass social media in trust, with 30% of Brits trusting public broadcasters like the BBC.
In Romania, the financial constraints faced by public broadcasters pose challenges. TVR, despite having two international channels and five regional studios, argues that the current funding is insufficient to support all its television activities effectively. Notably, one of its national broadcasting channels was closed in March 2026, further emphasizing the pressures on public media.
As the media landscape evolves, the need for trust and reliable information remains paramount. The recent appointments of new boards and presidents for Radio România and TVR in 2025 signal a commitment to revitalizing public media in Romania, ensuring that it can continue to serve its audience with integrity.
