New motorway section between Cluj and Zalău set to open by December
A significant milestone is on the horizon for Romania's transport infrastructure, with over 40 kilometers of new motorway between Cluj and Zalău expected to allow unrestricted traffic by December 1. This project, which connects Nădăşelu to Topa Mică and Poarta Sălajului, is a remarkable achievement in enhancing connectivity in the region.
The new motorway section covers a total length of 42.78 kilometers and includes two important road junctions. Among its features are 14 bridges and 18 viaducts, showcasing the scale and complexity of the construction efforts.
The project is being financed through a combination of European funds and the state budget, with a total investment exceeding 4.6 billion lei. Notably, 1.28 billion lei comes from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), underscoring the role of European support in advancing Romania's infrastructure.
Currently, the construction works are at an advanced stage, with physical progress nearing completion. The sections between Nădăşelu and Mihăieşti, as well as Mihăieşti and Zimbor, are nearly finished at approximately 97%. The Zimbor to Poarta Sălajului segment is even closer to completion, at 99%, with an estimated finish date in August 2026.
Additionally, the road junction at Românaşi is 90% complete, with a projected completion by the same August deadline. The complex viaduct works are also expected to be finalized by the end of this year, further paving the way for smoother travel.
By the end of the year, the new sections will be interconnected with the existing motorway from Cluj, enhancing access and efficiency in the region's transport network. This project marks a significant step forward in Romania's infrastructure development, promising to benefit local communities and the economy alike.
