Mintia prepares to rejoin Romania's national energy grid with first megawatt delivery next week
Mintia is on track to make a significant comeback in Romania's energy landscape, with the first megawatt set to be delivered to the national grid next week. This marks a crucial step in revitalizing a facility that has a storied history of over fifty years.
Starting next week, hot tests for the first gas turbine will commence, which has a power output of 590 MW. These tests are expected to last approximately one to one and a half months, leading up to the energization scheduled for June 15. Following this, energy production at Mintia will begin to flow into the grid between June 17 and 18.
The second gas turbine, also rated at 590 MW, is anticipated to be energized next month, positioning Mintia to potentially operate at over 1,000 MW in commercial mode before the year's end. The plant is designed with a total capacity of 1,700 MW and will operate in a combined cycle.
The project, developed by Mass Global Energy Rom, aims to establish Mintia as the largest plant of its kind in Europe. Mass Global Energy Rom acquired the old power plant in 2022 for €91.23 million, excluding VAT, and the total investment is estimated at around €1.4 billion.
Once fully operational, Mintia is expected to produce over 12,000 GWh of electricity annually. While the steam turbine has already been delivered, a boiler is still pending arrival, alongside a necessary transformer for the electrical station and reinforcement of a Transelectrica line. The complete operational deadline is set for the latter part of 2027.
