Florești emerges as Romania's largest battery storage facility, boosting energy capacity
Florești, located in Cluj County, has officially become the largest battery storage facility in Romania, with a capacity of 201 MW and 402 MWh. Operated by Nova Power & Gas and part of the E-INFRA group, Florești features 45 containers of batteries, each with a capacity of 4.5 MWh, and was completed in December 2025.
The total electricity storage capacity in Romania has seen significant growth, rising from 1,100 MWh in April 2026 to 1,630 MWh by mid-June 2026. This increase is bolstered by the installation of additional facilities like Gura Ialomiței and Iaz, contributing to a total installed power reaching 878 MW in June 2026.
Gura Ialomiței, inaugurated in mid-June 2026, has a capacity of 150 MW and 300 MWh, with plans for a second phase that will add 100 MW and 200 MWh more. Developed by Aukera Energy, Gura Ialomiței is currently under construction and is expected to be completed by the end of 2026, with technical implementation handled by Electrogrup.
In the Banat region, Iaz stands out with its capacity of 100 MW and 206 MWh, making it the largest installation in the area. Developed by Energy Capital Group, part of Turkey's GÜRİŞ Group, Iaz includes 44 lithium-ion battery containers and an advanced energy management system, and it was completed in May 2026.
Gabriel Andronache, vice president of ANRE, indicated that the installed power of storage capacities in Romania could reach 2,000 MW by the end of 2026. This promising outlook follows last year's nearly 600 MW of dispatchable storage capacity.
Supporting these developments, the European Commission has approved a 150 million euro aid scheme for Romania, aimed at installing at least 2,174 MWh of storage systems by December 31, 2030. This initiative represents a crucial step toward enhancing Romania's energy resilience and sustainability.
