Electricity production sees a notable increase amid declining primary energy resources

18 Jun 2026, 11:00

In the first four months of 2026, Romania experienced a significant growth in electricity production, which rose by 7%. This boost comes at a time when the country's primary energy resources have faced challenges, declining by 3.3% compared to the same period in 2025.

Despite the reduction in primary energy resources, which totaled 10.48 million tonnes of oil equivalent (tep), the electricity sector has shown resilience. The domestic production of primary energy has dropped by 1.5%, now standing at 5.5 million tep, indicating a need for strategic adjustments in energy sourcing and consumption.

Interestingly, the final consumption of electricity has also seen a decrease, falling by 2.7%. On a positive note, Romania’s energy exports have reached record levels, increasing by nearly 16%, showcasing the country’s capacity to supply energy beyond its borders.

Moreover, total imports of energy have decreased by 5.2%, settling at 4.98 million tep. This shift indicates a potential move towards greater self-sufficiency in energy, even as challenges in primary energy production continue to unfold.
