A new commemorative coin celebrates 150 years of the Romanian Red Cross
On July 2, 2026, the National Bank of Romania (BNR) will launch a special coin to honor 150 years since the founding of the Romanian Red Cross. This initiative marks a significant milestone in recognizing the humanitarian contributions of this esteemed organization since its establishment in 1876.
The coin will feature a detailed depiction of the Colțea Hospital, the first headquarters of the Romanian Red Cross, on its obverse side. Accompanying this image will be the inscription "ROMANI" in an arc, along with the coat of arms of Romania.
With a nominal value of 10 LEI, the coin will be minted in silver, with an approved circulation of only 500 pieces. Each coin will be beautifully packaged in transparent metacrylate capsules, ensuring they are preserved in excellent condition for collectors and enthusiasts.
The reverse side of the coin will prominently display the emblem of the Red Cross, along with scenes depicting its activities throughout different years. An inscription will read: "SOCIETATEA NATIONALA DE CRUCE ROSIE DIN ROMANIA - 150 DE ANI DE LA INFIINTARE," celebrating this momentous anniversary.
To enhance the collector's experience, the coins will come with presentation brochures and certificates of authenticity, available in Romanian, English, and French. These documents will bear the signatures of the BNR governor and the central cashier, adding to their value.
The selling price for each silver coin will be 1,100.00 lei, including VAT, and this price encompasses both the presentation brochure and the authenticity certificate. The coins will also have legal tender status across Romania, making them not just collectibles, but a part of the national currency.
Collectors can purchase the coins through BNR’s regional branches in Bucharest, Cluj, Constanța, Dolj, Iași, and Timiș, marking a moment of pride for both the Romanian Red Cross and the nation as a whole.
